The History of Asexuality

Obviously, this timeline is not exhaustive, but hopefully you learn something new anyway! A lot of asexuality’s history is pretty recent – but that just means we’re still creating it!

Growing Up Asexual | Story Time

I hope this story resonates with some of you. Obviously, this is only my personal experience. Also, I don’t mean to say that asexual people always experience crushes differently, or that it’s not “normal” to ever experience them. I’m just trying to be honest about what I thought at the time!

Ace Discourse | Let’s Chat (Rant?)

Ok, yeah, this turned into a little bit of a rant. And I tried SO HARD to be objective. RIP.
Ace discourse really should be left in 2017 guys. Let’s make 2018 the year of appreciating asexual and aromantic people for who they are.

The Split Attraction Model: Pros and Cons

If you’re particularly sensitive to ace discourse, this may not be the video for you, because I’m looking critically at some of the arguments against the split attraction model, and talking about why I still think it’s valuable.

Also, stick around to the end for the first ever “blooper” on this channel.

This is an excellent and thoughtful video. I thought I might add on a bit, from the perspective of an aroace person who finds the split attraction model to be vital to their orientation.

Despite my orientations ‘matching’, I use the split attraction model. I separate my lack of romantic and sexual attraction. That may be confusing to some people, but the reason is that I discovered and accepted those terms separately. While they are intensely connected and intertwined aspects of my orientation, they are not the same thing to me.

Specifically, I focus much, much more on the aromantic part of my identity. I feel more connected to my aromanticism and I find more pushback in my social life to not experiencing romantic attraction. Asexuality is a part of me, but it’s not something I focus on as much as I do my aromanticism.

The split attraction model has its issues, but I appreciate the conclusion @ameliaace comes to in this video: we need to listen to and respect those who do not use it, but that does not mean we cannot use it to define ourselves.

Coming up with alternatives is a good idea, though I admit that I’m personally hesitant to attach myself to labels that might not catch on. That doesn’t mean they’d not be useful to some, however!

And quite honestly, I would be interested in a term that explains being aroace as one identity instead of two…even though I view them as separate, explaining it as such is complicated and exhausting, so much so that I don’t bother to come out to people that often.

But simply calling myself “asexual” isn’t an adequate or accurate description of myself, and only calling myself “aromantic” requires an explanation of the SAM and confuses people who have trouble understanding why anyone would split their identity in the first place.

I don’t have the answers, but I’m glad that the questions are being asked.

Thank you for this addition! There’s definitely a need for a word that means asexual+aromantic.
